Safety as a redressal mechanism for the protection of people, non-human and environments has generated a technocratic response to environmental contamination and to deny/prolong taking necessary action to address the protection of contaminated communities. For example, in Tummalapalle, Andhra Pradesh, local people living around uranium mine allege that the mine has not been lined properly.Uranium Corporation of India, Limited (UCIL) claims that it has lined the mine with clay lining of desired stipultions as per safety requirements in the regulatory codes and guide. Since all the safety measures are in place, UCIL denies that the contamination is due to its operations. This denial, based on safety assertions, enable UCIL to deflect its responsibility to carry out new scientific studies on underground hydrology or an epidemiological survey of the area's population, let alone listen to the ailing population. Even today, people around Tummalapalle undergo spontaneous abortions, dermatitis, bone and muscle pain, cancer and others due to the contamination of the land which ranges upto 660 ppb of uranium in some places against the desired levels of 3-5 ppb of uranium.
